Natural stone stairs that make an entrance — inside and out.
Stone staircases set the tone for an entire home or building. Interior stairs call for marble, travertine, and limestone; exterior steps demand dense stone with high slip resistance — granite, slate, and quartzite.
What the application demands
| Tread thickness | 3cm minimum; 5cm for cantilever |
| Nosing overhang | 3/4"–1.5" beyond riser face |
| Tread finish | Honed, sandblasted, or flamed — NEVER polished |
| Riser material | Stone or matching material; tile risers acceptable |
| Anti-slip strips | Exterior stone steps: brass or carborundum insert at nose |
Recommended stones
Marble
The prestige interior staircase material. Honed finish essential for safety on treads.
Granite
Best for exterior steps — virtually indestructible, excellent freeze-thaw, and non-slip flamed finish.

How to Install Natural Stone Stair Treads
Professional guide for setting stone treads on interior and exterior staircases.
Prepare the substrate
Ensure concrete or steel stair pans are clean, sound, and level. Chip off any existing tile. Apply a bonding primer if the concrete is older or smooth. For exterior stairs, verify that the concrete is pitched slightly forward (1%) for drainage.
Cut treads to size
Measure each step individually — stairs are rarely perfectly uniform. Cut treads with a wet saw equipped with a continuous-rim diamond blade. Profile the nosing edge (bullnose, eased, or square) to match the design intent. Sand or hone cut edges smooth.
Dry-fit all treads
Dry-fit every tread before applying adhesive. Mark the underside of each tread with its step number. For marble or light stone, use white thinset to prevent gray telegraphing through.
Set treads in mortar
Apply polymer-modified thinset with a notched trowel to both the substrate and the underside of the tread (back-buttering). Set firmly, check level and alignment. Maintain a consistent nosing overhang (typically 1"). Support the tread's front edge if it overhangs the riser by more than 3".
Grout, caulk, and seal
Grout joints at risers with sanded or unsanded grout as appropriate. Caulk the joint between wall and tread where movement may occur. Seal all stone treads with penetrating sealer — especially exterior stone. Reapply sealer annually for exterior steps.
