Professional Restoration Process
Professional stone restoration is a multi-step process that requires specialized equipment, diamond abrasives, and expertise. The specific steps depend on the stone type and the extent of the damage.
- 1. Assessment and Preparation: The professional will evaluate the stone, identify the type of damage (scratches, deep etching, lippage), and determine the appropriate restoration plan. The surrounding areas are protected to prevent damage from water and slurry.
- 2. Grinding (Lippage Removal): If the stone tiles are uneven (lippage) or have deep scratches, the surface is ground down using heavy-duty floor machines equipped with coarse diamond abrasive pads. This step flattens the floor and removes the deepest damage.
- 3. Honing: This step uses progressively finer diamond abrasives to smooth the stone surface, removing the scratches left by the grinding process. Honing can also be the final step if a matte or satin finish is desired.
- 4. Polishing: To achieve a high-gloss finish, the stone is polished using very fine diamond abrasives and specialized polishing powders or compounds. This process restores the stone's natural shine and clarity.
- 5. Sealing: Once the desired finish is achieved and the stone is thoroughly cleaned and dried, a high-quality impregnating sealer is applied to protect the newly restored surface from future staining.
