Granite — pool deck

4/5 suitability

Granite pavers are highly durable, resistant to scratching, fading, and staining, making them suitable for pool decks. Textured finishes provide excellent slip resistance, enhancing safety around wet areas. It is also resistant to pool chemicals.

Considerations

Polished granite is too slippery for pool decks. It can be more expensive than other paving options. The dark colors of some granite varieties can absorb and retain heat, making the surface hot in direct sunlight.

Specifications

  • Finish: Flamed, Bush-hammered, or Sandblasted finishes are highly recommended for pool decks to ensure superior slip resistance and a natural, textured look.
  • Thickness: 1.25 inches (approx. 3 cm) for pavers is commonly recommended for pool decks to ensure durability and stability under foot traffic and environmental exposure.
  • ASTM: ASTM C615/C615M (Standard Specification for Granite Dimension Stone). Freeze-thaw resistance (e.g., ASTM C666/C666M) and water absorption (ASTM C97/C97M) are critical for outdoor applications. DCOF testing is essential.
  • Maintenance: Low to Medium (requires regular cleaning to prevent algae and mildew growth. Sealing is generally not critical but can be applied for added stain protection).
  • Installed: $40-$120/sq ft (material and installation costs vary based on granite type, finish, paver size, and complexity of the installation).
