Marble — pool deck

3/5 suitability

Marble pavers, especially with textured finishes, offer a luxurious and elegant aesthetic for pool decks. Its density can make it resistant to elements, and certain finishes provide good slip resistance, enhancing safety around wet areas.

Considerations

Marble is porous and can absorb water, leading to potential staining, discoloration, and freeze-thaw damage in colder climates. Polished marble is extremely slippery when wet, making it unsuitable for pool decks. It can also be more susceptible to etching from pool chemicals.

Specifications

  • Finish: Sandblasted, tumbled, or leathered finishes are highly recommended for pool decks to ensure adequate slip resistance. These textured finishes provide better grip when wet.
  • Thickness: 1.25 inches (approx. 3 cm) is commonly recommended for marble pavers used in pool decks to ensure durability and stability.
  • ASTM: ASTM C503/C503M (Standard Specification for Marble Dimension Stone) for general material properties. Freeze-thaw resistance (e.g., ASTM C666/C666M) is critical for outdoor applications in relevant climates. Water absorption (EN 13755 or ASTM C97/C97M) is also important.
  • Maintenance: Medium to High (requires regular cleaning to prevent algae and mildew growth, and periodic sealing to protect against staining and water absorption. Care must be taken with pool chemicals).
  • Installed: $50-$150/sq ft (material and installation costs can vary based on marble type, finish, paver size, and complexity of the installation).
